Doonagiri Temple, located in Almora district of Uttarakhand, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga, also known as Maa Dunagiri. Surrounded by the Kumaon Himalayas, this spiritually significant site is revered as a Shaktipeeth and attracts pilgrims seeking blessings and peace.
Doonagiri Temple, also spelled Dunagiri, is one of the most revered temples in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. Perched at an altitude of around 2,500 meters above sea level, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, who is worshipped here in the form of Maa Dunagiri Devi. The temple is located in Doonagiri village, about 14 km from Dwarahat and approximately 50 km from Ranikhet.
Believed to be part of the 108 Shaktipeeths, the temple holds immense religious and mythological importance. According to legend, during the Ramayana era, the Sanjeevani herb that Lord Hanuman carried to revive Lakshman fell on this hill, blessing the land with divine energy. This is why the region is also known as "Brahm-parvat" in local scriptures.
Doonagiri Temple is believed to be one of the spots where a part of the Sanjeevani herb fell when Lord Hanuman was carrying the Dronagiri mountain to revive Lakshman during the Ramayana. The temple is an ancient Shakti Peeth and has been worshipped for centuries by the local people. It also finds mention in various Puranic texts.
