Perched on the Sher Ka Danda hill at an altitude of 2,100m (6900 ft), the Nainital Zoo spans 4.6 hectares (11 acres). Established in 1984 and open to visitors since 1995, it earned its official name Pt Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo in 2002. As one of India's three high-altitude zoos, alongside those in Sikkim and Darjeeling, it houses endangered species like the Royal Bengal Tiger, Sambar, Tibetan Wolves, Leopard Cat, Barking Deer, Japanese Macaque, and Himalayan bear. The zoo also hosts a variety of birds, such as Golden Pheasant, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Kalij Pheasant, Lady Amherst Pheasant, Steppe Eagle, Hill Partridge, White Peafowl, Blossom Headed Parakeet, and Red Junglefowl. Many animals find homes through adoption by individuals or animal organizations.
