One of the best trek of my april trek diary. I hiked Tungnath Mahadev solo on 23-April-2022 and here are my tips for fellow travelers - DOs: 1. Start early. Certainly no later than 7am. The weather changes dramatically in the afternoon, especially at Chandrashila. 2. Take a trekking pole or bamboo stick. Sticks are available near the starting gate and cost 10,20 rupees only. Poles/sticks will help you through, particularly if you are not a seasoned trekker. 3. Take a 1 ltr water bottle with you, and some energy bars or chocolate. 4. Take rest every 20-25 mins in the shade. 5. Book hotel near the starting gate. Stay the night before so you can start early the next day. DON'Ts: 1. Underestimate the trek. Distance is 3.5km to Tungnath and further 1km to Chandrashila. Total distance will be around 10km. If you are a novice or beginner, it will test your stamina. 2. Ride a mule or donkey. Better to walk. 3. Feed any animals during the trek. There are lot of monkeys around who will jump at you when they see you distributing food. 4. Litter the place with your food waste. Keep all waste with you and dispose after you complete the trek.
I went here in August 2014, when me and my friend did a couple of treks in Uttarakhand. To get here, we got a taxi from Ukhimath (to which you can go from Rudraprayag) to Chopta...From Chopta, it's a steady uphill climb till you reach the top. We started at around 2 PM in the afternoon and would have reached by around 5 PM to the top...The view enroute is beautiful, starting with green meadows in the beginning and getting more scenic as you go up....There are stops for refreshments along the way, so it wont be very tiring.. I did recall seeing folks taking the mule up, so that option is available if you want to take elders along. At Tungnath, there is no electricity and only basic supplies. We stayed at this place called Ganesh hotel for Rs.150 a room a night, and were served hot rotis and dal for dinner as we sat by the fireplace warming ourselves and having a delicious meal for dinner as well.. you can charge your phone (using the solar power they manage to capture during the day) and get hot water on demand. It gets pretty cold in the night here and it's good to have layered clothing to be able to manage up here. There is also an aarti for the Shiva in the Tungnath temple (which is around 5000 years old or more) at 7-730 PM in the evening which is extremely peaceful and you literally are above the clouds by now and it's so silent and calm...
Simple awesome!! One of the best trek in my life!! It takes 2-3 hrs to reach Tungnath from Chopta. So do not start after 4 PM preferably so that you reach in daylight and do not miss sunset which can be a nice view at Tungnath. If you have too much luggage, higher portar in chopta. The path is well paved, wading through lush green forest. It is a stead climb from 2680 ft to 3680 ft and you can feel the chill once you reach heights. Do not forget woolens.
Halted briefly at Chopta for Tungnath trek. Eatries are of average standard, but food (had Maggi, Aloo Parantha & Chai) served was awesome. Being Garhwali was an added advantage for us as we got spl. Chai, extra butter, good bargain on trekking gears, and above all a big smile on the faces of locals was unmatched. Will visit again during Summers, for Chandrashilla (it started snowing as we reached Tungnath ❄️🌨❄️💃)
Lush green 🌳in summers and snow ❄ covered in winters. One of the most beautiful place I've ever been to.
Place with stunning grassland meadows in summers and views of snow capped peaks all the year round. Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, is just a 4 km trek from this place. Further 1 km up is Chandrashila, from where one can see 360 degree views of the Himalayas, only if mist and clouds show mercy.
