Kedarkantha Trek Overview

If you've ever thought about walking on snow-covered trails, exploring pine forests, and sleeping under a million stars, the Kedarkantha Trek is the experience you've been dreaming of. Located in Sankri Village in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, the Kedarkantha Trek has emerged as one of India's most popular winter trekking destinations, especially from December to April. The trekking experience is appealingly uncomplicated — access is easy, the views are grand, and it is unbelievably rewarding.

Over approximately five days, you will cover about 20 kilometers, which is great for beginners looking to experience the Himalayas for the first time. You will reach a maximum altitude of about 12,500 feet (3,800 meters), where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak ranges. The Kedarkantha Trek has perfectly balanced landscapes — you will appreciate the snow-covered peaks and quiet trails, whether you are a solo traveler, friend group, or family looking for safe mountain escape. It is so much more than just a trek in the Himalayas; it is about having your own unique journey of stillness, courage, and unlock your capabilities.

Kedarkantha Trek Highlights

Right when we begin our journey from Sankri, that little and happening base village, you can immediately feel that mountain vibe, wooden homestays, and views of snow covered pine trees.

Sankri is located at 6,400 ft above sea level, and is the place to be for Kedarkantha and many other famous treks including Har Ki Dun.

As we move on, the trail leads us to Juda Ka Talab, a beautiful high-altitude lake surrounded by forests. In winter, it becomes completely frozen — marveling around it feels like being in a postcard.

Then the fun part, you ascend to the Kedarkantha Peak. The climb to the top is generally done early morning to catch the sunrise, and believe me, it’s worth every inch of the hike. When you finally reach the top, the sun begins to fill the crisp Himalayas with golden light — it is a memory that will stay with you forever.

Along the way, we also camp at the Kedarkantha Base Camp, the final stop before the summit push. You’ll experience snow trekking during the winter season, making it a perfect winter trek in Uttarakhand.

Kedarkantha: Queen of Winter Treks

Kedarkantha is called the “Queen of Winter Treks” and after you experience it for yourself, you will understand why. The deep wilderness of Kedarkantha is covered by new snow each winter, giving it sweeping views of an unspoiled white paradise for those who want to enjoy the snow covered beauty of the Himalayas without needing mountaineering skills.

If you are a photographer, then every shot feels unbelievable, from the reflections in Juda Ka Talab to the pastel colored skies above the peaks. For picnicking families and beginners, it is one of the safest treks in the Himalayas, with clearly laid trails, plenty of camps and sites to rest.

It is also packed with flora and fauna — Himalayan monals, pine, oak and rhododendron forested areas come alive in the Spring, so whether you are seeking adventure or tranquillity, Kedarkantha certainly deserves recognition as the Queen of Winter Treks — large, inviting and full of life.

Difficulty Level of Kedarkantha Trek

When people ask me about the Kedarkantha trek difficulty, I always say it’s the perfect “first Himalayan trek.” The trail is moderate, meaning it challenges you just enough without overwhelming you.
Each day involves around 4 to 6 hours of trekking, with gentle ascents and clear paths.
The highest altitude you’ll reach is about 12,500 feet, which requires basic acclimatization — but nothing technical.

If you can walk 5 km daily and have average fitness, you’re good to go. A few simple preparations — like stair climbing, cardio, and light strength training — make a huge difference.
The real challenge is mental — staying motivated through cold weather and snow, especially early morning summit climbs. But once you see the sunrise from the peak, you’ll forget all the fatigue.

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri

Your trek starts at 6:00 AM from Dehradun ISBT where our FirstTrek team meets you. We load everyone into our vehicle and begin the 200-kilometer drive to Sankri village. The drive takes around 8–10 hours through winding mountain roads. You’ll pass through Mussoorie’s hills, follow the Yamuna River through Purola, and continue through Mori’s pine forests before arriving in Sankri. About 22 kilometers before Sankri, the road enters Govind National Park. Here the scenery shifts to thick forests, mountain streams, and your first glimpse of snow-capped peaks. We reach Sankri village by evening, a small settlement at 6,400 feet serving as the base camp. After checking into your guesthouse, enjoy evening tea and snacks. Your trek leader covers route details, weather updates, and safety guidelines. Dinner is served before you rest for the night.

You’ll cross several small streams and pass traditional small himalayan villages. In winter, parts of the trail are snow-covered, adding a magical touch. By afternoon, we reach Juda Ka Talab, a lake at 9,100 feet that freezes completely in winter. Local legend says it formed when Lord Shiva dropped water from his hair.
