The Mythology of the Tungnath Temple

Tungnath Temple is one of the most ancient and sacred shrines in India. It is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, at an elevation of 3,680 meters above sea level. The temple is considered as one of the Panch Kedar and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The mythology of Tungnath Temple is quite intriguing and fascinating. Tungnath is the third Kedar out of Panch Kedar where the arms of Lord Shiva are worshipped. The foundation of this temple was laid down by Arjuna who was the third of the Pandava brothers. It was built in the North Indian style of architecture and has a dozen shrines of other Gods surrounding the temple.

According to the legend, after the Pandavas won the battle of Kurukshetra, they wanted to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva to wash away their sins. However, Lord Shiva was not ready to meet them and took the form of a bull and disappeared. The Pandavas followed him, and finally, they found the hump of the bull in the Tungnath region. The bull's body parts are scattered throughout the region, and the Tungnath temple is believed to have been built on the place where Lord Shiva's arms appeared. The Tungnath Temple is also associated with the Mahabharata. It is said that the temple's walls have images of the Pandavas and Kauravas, and the temple was also mentioned in the Skanda Purana.

Another story goes that the temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile, and it was a place where they used to worship Lord Shiva. The temple's architecture is believed to be over 1,000 years old, and it is said to be the highest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the world.

We visited Chopta in August 2022 with our friends from dehradun It was a bike tour. Chopta is very beautiful place with immense beauty and charm. It is less crowded and one can Enjoy nature in Its fullest form here. For stay, no hotels or resorts and tents, camps are only options which increase your travel experience. We went to Tungnath temple, chandrashila Peak and Deoriyatal trek. We enjoyed the trip very much. Thanks you Firstrek for providing luxiorious camps and makes our journey memorable :)

Chopta chandrashila trek. I have been through this trek this month, booked it from firstrek and after seeing the highest lord shiva temple and chandrashila peak which have 360 degree view itself at approx altitude of 3690 meters. The guide upendra helps us a lot during this trek and camping experience was also too good the meal and everything was as planned by team firstrek. We have started this journey from delhi via maruti swift desire car and it was like Itinerary : Started at 5 am from dilshad garden delhi, the driver malik pickedup from our location. And we started from delhi. At 10 am we have reached to rishikesh after having views of ganga and mountains we moved for devprayag. In devprayag we had a break for lunch and enjoyed the ganga sangam views. After that we moved from rudraprayag to chopta dugalbita, where we stayed that night at mountain delight camp. Day 2 - we started our trek from campsite at early morning via car we have reached to tungnath temple gate at chopta market. After that we have been through rohini bugyal and th trail of tungnath temple. Once we reached to temple we did worship their and i feel a different kind of aura of this place. After few hours we moved to chandrashila trek. After that we have reached to my dream peak chandrashila where i saw small temple of maa ganga which have a popular saying that here lord rama worshiped for maa ganga and lord shiva. We have done meditation here in this place for hours of time we spent their and then moved back to campsite in evening. Day -3: Early morning we have reached to sari village via car and started our trek to deoriatal with guide upendra and at 9am we have reached at deoria lake which is surrounded by trees and green grass. And this lake has beautiful view of chaukhamba peak and few otherz peak i have love for peaks so that the reflection of peak on lake made me fall in love with this place. We have spent hours here. After that we have moved back to home. Thanks for reading my reviewЁЯЩПЁЯШКЁЯШКЁЯзЧтАНтЩВя╕ПтЫ░я╕П

One of the best trek of my april trek diary. I hiked Tungnath Mahadev solo on 23-April-2022 and here are my tips for fellow travelers - DOs: 1. Start early. Certainly no later than 7am. The weather changes dramatically in the afternoon, especially at Chandrashila. 2. Take a trekking pole or bamboo stick. Sticks are available near the starting gate and cost 10,20 rupees only. Poles/sticks will help you through, particularly if you are not a seasoned trekker. 3. Take a 1 ltr water bottle with you, and some energy bars or chocolate. 4. Take rest every 20-25 mins in the shade. 5. Book hotel near the starting gate. Stay the night before so you can start early the next day. DON'Ts: 1. Underestimate the trek. Distance is 3.5km to Tungnath and further 1km to Chandrashila. Total distance will be around 10km. If you are a novice or beginner, it will test your stamina. 2. Ride a mule or donkey. Better to walk. 3. Feed any animals during the trek. There are lot of monkeys around who will jump at you when they see you distributing food. 4. Litter the place with your food waste. Keep all waste with you and dispose after you complete the trek.

I went here in August 2014, when me and my friend did a couple of treks in Uttarakhand. To get here, we got a taxi from Ukhimath (to which you can go from Rudraprayag) to Chopta...From Chopta, it's a steady uphill climb till you reach the top. We started at around 2 PM in the afternoon and would have reached by around 5 PM to the top...The view enroute is beautiful, starting with green meadows in the beginning and getting more scenic as you go up....There are stops for refreshments along the way, so it wont be very tiring.. I did recall seeing folks taking the mule up, so that option is available if you want to take elders along. At Tungnath, there is no electricity and only basic supplies. We stayed at this place called Ganesh hotel for Rs.150 a room a night, and were served hot rotis and dal for dinner as we sat by the fireplace warming ourselves and having a delicious meal for dinner as well.. you can charge your phone (using the solar power they manage to capture during the day) and get hot water on demand. It gets pretty cold in the night here and it's good to have layered clothing to be able to manage up here. There is also an aarti for the Shiva in the Tungnath temple (which is around 5000 years old or more) at 7-730 PM in the evening which is extremely peaceful and you literally are above the clouds by now and it's so silent and calm...

Simple awesome!! One of the best trek in my life!! It takes 2-3 hrs to reach Tungnath from Chopta. So do not start after 4 PM preferably so that you reach in daylight and do not miss sunset which can be a nice view at Tungnath. If you have too much luggage, higher portar in chopta. The path is well paved, wading through lush green forest. It is a stead climb from 2680 ft to 3680 ft and you can feel the chill once you reach heights. Do not forget woolens.

Halted briefly at Chopta for Tungnath trek. Eatries are of average standard, but food (had Maggi, Aloo Parantha & Chai) served was awesome. Being Garhwali was an added advantage for us as we got spl. Chai, extra butter, good bargain on trekking gears, and above all a big smile on the faces of locals was unmatched. Will visit again during Summers, for Chandrashilla (it started snowing as we reached Tungnath тЭДя╕ПЁЯМитЭДя╕ПЁЯТГ)

Place with stunning grassland meadows in summers and views of snow capped peaks all the year round. Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, is just a 4 km trek from this place. Further 1 km up is Chandrashila, from where one can see 360 degree views of the Himalayas, only if mist and clouds show mercy.
