Mythology & Legends of Madmaheshwar Temple
It is a thousand-year-old temple of Lord Shiva situated in the great Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. This temple is made by “the Panch Pandwa“, which is the second of the “Panch Kedar”. The place is filled with mythology and the legend is linked to the period of Mahabharata; one of the two epics in Hinduism — where pandas built the Madhyamaheshwar temple to atone for their sin of killing Kauravas and Brahmans in the Kurukshetra war.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is worshipped in the form of a navel-shaped Lingam. The middle (Madhya) or belly part or navel (nabhi) of the Shiv, considered a divine form of Shiva, is worshipped at this temple. It is only open for 6 months in the summer session. in the winter session, it comes at Ukhimath temple.

Madhyamaheshwar Trek Detailed Itinerary
Day 1- Rishikesh to Ransi via Ukhimath (186 km)
We begin our journey from Rishikesh, driving 177 km through scenic Garhwal landscapes to reach Ukhimath. En route, enjoy views of lush valleys and the sacred Ganges. At Ukhimath, we’ll take a short break and visit the revered Omkareshwar Temple. From there, we continue 9 km to Ransi village, a peaceful hamlet and base for many Himalayan treks. This day sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
Day 2- Trek from Ransi to Madmaheshwar Temple (16 km)
The trek from Ransi to Madmaheshwar covers 16 km and takes around 6 to 8 hours, depending on pace and acclimatization. The trail winds through lush meadows, dense forests, and scenic Himalayan terrain, offering great opportunities for nature photography and spotting local wildlife. By evening, we’ll reach the sacred Madmaheshwar Temple and attend the evening aarti of Lord Shiva. Afterward, we’ll head to a nearby guesthouse for dinner and rest, preparing for the next day's journey.
Day 3- Madmaheshwar to Old Madmaheshwar and back to Gaundhar (14 km)
We start with a short 2 km trek to Old Madmaheshwar, an ancient site offering stunning views and spiritual significance. After spending some time exploring, we retrace our steps to Madmaheshwar and then continue the descent to Gaundhar Village. The total trek for the day covers approximately 14 km, marking the end of a fulfilling and scenic day.
Day 4- Gaundhar to Ransi – Drive to Rishikesh
After breakfast, we begin our return trek to Ransi Village (6km from Gaundar). From there, we drive back to Ukhimath and continue onwards to Rishikesh. By evening, we arrive in Rishikesh, bringing our Madmaheshwar trek to a close. This journey through the mystical Himalayas leaves us with cherished memories, spiritual serenity, and a heart full of gratitude.
