Mansa Devi Temple, Haridwar Overview

Mansa Devi Temple

Mansa Devi Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples located in the holy city of Haridwar in the state of Uttarakhand, India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi, who is believed to be a form of Shakti or the divine feminine power. The temple is situated on the top of Bilwa Parvat (hill) and offers stunning panoramic views of the city of Haridwar and the Ganges river. The temple is considered one of the holiest places in Haridwar, and thousands of devotees from all over India and the world visit the temple every year to seek blessings and fulfillment of their wishes.

The temple can be reached by trekking up the hill, which takes around 45 minutes, or by using the cable car service that operates from the base of the hill. The cable car ride offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and forests. The temple is believed to have been built in the 11th century by King Mansa Devi of the Parmar dynasty. Legend has it that the king was childless and prayed to the goddess to bless him with a child. The goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to build a temple in her honor. The king did as he was told, and soon after, his wish was granted, and he was blessed with a son.

The temple is known for its unique tradition of tying threads or "dhagas" on the branches of a tree inside the temple premises. Devotees believe that tying the thread on the tree is a way of making a wish to the goddess, and once their wish is fulfilled, they return to the temple to untie the thread. Apart from the main temple, there are several other smaller temples dedicated to various Hindu deities within the temple complex. The temple also hosts a vibrant market selling souvenirs, religious items, and offerings for the goddess.
