Vishwanath Temple, Guptkashi Overview

Vishwanath Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in the town of Guptkashi, which is situated in the Rudraprayag district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is considered to be one of the most important pilgrimage sites for the devotees of Lord Shiva in the region.

The temple is believed to have been constructed by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era. According to legend, after the end of the war, the Pandavas were on their way to Kashi (Varanasi) to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their sins during the war. However, Lord Shiva, being aware of their intentions, took the form of a bull and hid in Guptkashi. The Pandavas were unable to find Lord Shiva in Kashi and decided to meditate in Guptkashi. It was during this meditation that Lord Shiva revealed himself to the Pandavas and blessed them.
The temple is situated at an altitude of 1,198 meters above sea level and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, making it a picturesque location for the visitors. The architecture of the temple is a mix of North Indian and South Indian styles, and it is constructed using grey stones.
The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, who is worshipped in the form of a lingam. The lingam is believed to be self-manifested, and it is said to have miraculous powers. The temple also has idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Nandi, which are worshipped by the devotees.
The temple is open throughout the year, and it attracts a large number of devotees, especially during the months of July and August, which are considered to be the peak pilgrimage season. The temple is also a popular stopover for the devotees who are on their way to the Kedarnath Temple, which is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for the Hindus.
