Anusuya Mata Temple, nestled in the serene landscapes of Chitrakoot, holds a sacred place in Hindu mythology and spirituality. This ancient temple, dedicated to Goddess Anusuya, attracts devotees and travellers alike with its mystical aura and historical significance. Join us on a journey to unravel the secrets and marvels of Anusuya Mata Temple.

Maa Anusuya Mata Temple & Atri Minu Ashram

Location: Village, Mandal, Chamoli, Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand, India.
Trek distance: 6 Kilometer

Legend has it that Goddess Anusuya, renowned for her chastity and devotion, resided in the forests of Chitrakoot with her husband, Sage Atri. The trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara once visited their hermitage in disguise, seeking to test Anusuya’s virtues. Impressed by her unwavering devotion, they requested that she serve them food in a state of nudity. Anusuya, with her divine powers, turned them into infants and nursed them. This act of maternal love and devotion earned her the title of Mata Anusuya, the motherly goddess.

The Anusuya Mata Temple stands as a symbol of faith and spirituality, attracting pilgrims from far and wide. Built-in the traditional Hindu architectural style, the temple exudes an aura of tranquility and devotion. The sanctum sanctorum houses the idol of Goddess Anusuya, adorned with exquisite ornaments and offerings from devotees.

Devotees believe that paying homage to Anusuya Mata brings blessings of marital harmony, fertility, and prosperity. The temple serves as a spiritual sanctuary, where seekers find solace and divine guidance amidst the serene surroundings.

The temple witnesses a flurry of activities during festivals and auspicious occasions. Navaratri, the nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, is celebrated with great fervour and devotion. Devotees throng the temple to seek the blessings of Anusuya Mata and participate in special rituals and prayers.

Devotees offer various forms of worship, including prayers, chants, and floral tributes, to seek the blessings of Anusuya Mata. The temple priests conduct elaborate rituals and ceremonies, invoking the divine presence of the goddess and bestowing blessings upon the devotees.

Atri Muni Ashram

The Atri Muni Ashram is located at a distance of 2 km from the Anusuya Mata temple. The ashram is carved in the form of a cave. This place is believed to be the only holy place in the world where devotees circumambulate around a river as a mark of reverence.

Maa Anusuya Devi Fair

In December, on the occasion of Dattatreya Jayanti, a large fair is organized every year. Maa Anusuya Mata fair is organized on a large scale and it is believed that those couples who are deprived of the happiness of children come here with a wish to have children. No one goes empty-handed from the door of Maa Anusuya Devi.
Here, staying awake the whole night, the couple worships the mother and asks for a vow to have a child. During this, the couple sits with a lamp in their hand until they have a dream, and it is said that the couple does not tell anyone about the dream, and after the dream comes, the vow is fulfilled.

At the beginning of this trek, we find a small village; going beyond that, the forest begins, through which we have to make our journey. After going 2.5 km ahead in this trek, we first see Ganapati Ji, which is an idol carved on a stone. Going further than this, we also see some small inscriptions. It is not even known when the journey of 6 kilometers will be covered while looking at the beautiful view. You go to the temple and do your worship and prayer. After staying in the temple for some time, you take us to the hermitage of Atri Muni.
