According to mythology, a demon named Kulant lived in this temple. Once he stopped the water of river Beas to kill all the people. Mahadev got angry seeing this. After this Mahadev created an illusion. Lord Shiva went to the demon and told him that his tail had caught fire. As soon as the demon turned back after listening to Mahadev's words, Shivji attacked Kulant's head with a Trishul and he died there. It is said that the giant body of the demon turned into a mountain, which today we call the mountains of Kullu.
According to legend, after killing Kulant, Lord Shiva asked Indra to strike the place with lightning every 12 years. Lord Shiva asked to do this so that there is no loss of public money. The Lord himself protects his devotees by tolerating lightning strikes.
