Prashar Lake Trek Overview

Prashar Lake Trek is a popular trekking trail located in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The trek leads to the stunning Prashar Lake, which is situated at an altitude of 2,730 meters above sea level and is surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks.

The Prashar Lake Trek

Prashar Lake, a charming natural reservoir found in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, graces the Mandi district at an elevation of approximately 2,730 meters above sea level. This pristine expanse is ensconced by the serene embrace of majestic mountain ranges and lush woodlands, rendering it a favourite retreat for aficionados of the great outdoors, as well as trekking enthusiasts.

It derives its name from the venerated sage Prashar, who is believed to have sought spiritual solace in this very locale during antiquity. Local folklore weaves a tale of the lake’s genesis, attributing its formation to the sage Prashar’s sanctified staff striking the earth, thereby giving rise to the watery abyss. The lake holds profound sacred significance among the indigenous populace, and an edifice dedicated to the sage Prashar adorns the lake’s fringes.

The Prashar Lake trek stands as a prominent expedition route within Himachal Pradesh, celebrated for its awe-inspiring landscapes and panoramic vistas. This journey meanders through dense canopies of pine, oak, and cedar trees, all the while treating trekkers to sweeping panoramas of rugged peaks and tranquil valleys. Along the way, the path weaves through charming hamlets where one can immerse oneself in the authentic local culture and lifestyle of the indigenous inhabitants.

The trek starts in the village of Kantlu, which is located about 118 kilometres from the city of Mandi. The village is easily accessible by road, and there are several buses and taxis available from Mandi to Kantlu. The trek to Prashar Lake is a moderate-level trek and can be completed in 1 to 2 days. The trek route passes through dense forests, small villages, and meadows before reaching the beautiful Prashar Lake, which is situated at an altitude of 8,900 feet above sea level.

From Kantlu and follows a well-marked trail that passes through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine trees. The trail is quite steep in some places and requires a moderate level of fitness. After walking for around 7.5 kilometres, trekkers will reach a small village called Parashar.

From Parashar, the trail becomes easier and follows a gradual ascent to the lake. Trekkers will pass through several small streams and meadows before finally reaching the beautiful Prashar Lake. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

We was a group of 10 on this tour, part of a larger assembly of about 16 individuals. Our journey commenced with an overnight bus ride from Delhi, delivering us to Panasra by morning. There, we were graciously provided with comfortable hotel rooms for freshening up and indulging in a hearty breakfast. Following this satisfying meal, we embarked on the Prashar Lake trek, an extraordinary experience characterized by the abundant sunshine gracing both our ascent and descent. By afternoon, we reached the pristine lake and relished a delicious packed lunch by its tranquil shores. The evening was spent in the midst of nature, accompanied by a campfire and a delectable dinner. The following morning, as we descended, we also had the privilege of visiting a nearby village, offering us captivating vistas of some of the most awe-inspiring mountains I've ever laid eyes upon. The trek itself, spanning from easy to moderate in difficulty, is accessible and achievable even for beginners.
